HISTORY
The Stadsschouwburg (City theatre) was a class-based theatre. Everything was aimed at keeping the different classes in society apart. That is why there were separate entrances and stairwells, with the stairs at the Marnixbordes leading to the second balcony.

The Gijsbrechtbordes bears this name because of the mosaic that shows images from a special play. Joost van den Vondel wrote the Gysbrecht van Aemstel especially for the opening of the first Amsterdam City Theatre on the Keizersgracht in 1638. From then on, that performance was the traditional opening performance of the new year.
